Leading Edge Materials has initiated an Environmental Impact Assessment for its Norra Kärr heavy rare earth elements project in Sweden, following the government’s grant of an exploitation concession in June 2026. The assessment will support an environmental permit application planned for 2027 and examine biodiversity, site conditions and other environmental considerations.

SWEDEN —Greenna Mineral AB, the wholly owned Swedish subsidiary of Leading Edge Materials Corp., has started preparatory work for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) covering the Norra Kärr heavy rare earth elements project. The initiative moves the development into the next stage of Sweden’s mining approval process after the government granted the project a 25-year exploitation concession on 25 June 2026.

The concession establishes the project’s eligibility to proceed with mineral extraction, but it does not replace the separate environmental permit required before mining operations can begin. Leading Edge Materials plans to submit its environmental permit application during 2027. The application will be assessed by Sweden’s Land and Environment Court, which will determine the conditions governing any future operations.

Initial assessment work will include a nature-value inventory and preliminary environmental studies. The subsequent scope of investigations will be shaped through consultation with government authorities, landowners, local residents, organizations and other stakeholders. Swedish environmental legislation requires the assessment to establish an evidence base for evaluating potential effects and determining appropriate operating conditions.

The assessment will incorporate the revised project design presented during the concession application. Under this configuration, chemical processing would take place at a separate location rather than at the mine site, an approach intended to reduce the project's local environmental footprint. Further studies and permitting decisions will determine how the proposed design can be implemented within applicable environmental requirements.

Norra Kärr contains heavy rare earth elements, particularly dysprosium and terbium, alongside yttrium. These materials are used in advanced applications, including permanent magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines, as well as certain defence technologies. Developing a European source could contribute to supply diversification for manufacturers that rely on imported rare earth materials, although commercial production remains dependent on further permitting and project development.

The project is relevant to Sweden’s mining sector and Europe's broader critical-minerals supply chain. Heavy rare earths are strategically important to electrification, renewable energy equipment and other high-technology industries. However, the environmental review, stakeholder consultation and eventual permit conditions will be important determinants of the project's development timetable and potential investment requirements.

Leading Edge Materials is a Canadian-listed mineral exploration and development company focused on critical raw materials in Europe. Greenna Mineral AB is responsible for advancing Norra Kärr in Sweden. The company has engaged Ecogain, a Swedish environmental consultancy specializing in biodiversity and environmental assessment, to support the permitting process. The start of the EIA represents progress in project development, rather than confirmation of a final environmental approval or an operational mine.
