UK infrastructure specialist M Group has been selected to perform a £110 million upgrade on a critical Scottish power corridor running from Strathaven to Smeaton. The project involves replacing over 70 km of 400kV overhead power lines that were originally commissioned in the 1960s. Under the contract, teams will install nearly one million meters of high-capacity conductors across South Lanarkshire and East Lothian to modernize the transmission link connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh.
This initiative represents a key component of SP Energy Networks’ broader £12 billion transmission infrastructure update in central and southern Scotland. SP Energy Networks, a subsidiary of Iberdrola Group, owns and operates more than 4,500 km of overhead lines, 600 km of underground cables, and over 150 substations across the region. The operator’s wider capital expenditure roadmap entails £24 billion in total UK investments through 2028, supported by Ofgem’s regulatory framework approval for 2026 to 2031.
