INDIA —State-owned mining enterprise Mahanadi Coalfields Limited has executed memorandums of understanding with the Sundargarh district administration to fund five socio-economic development projects totaling 226.4 million Indian rupees. Under the corporate social responsibility framework, the funding allocation includes 109.9 million Indian rupees for restoring and beautifying three major water bodies, 78.4 million Indian rupees for renovating community tanks across the Talsara area, and 38.1 million Indian rupees to establish freshwater inland aquaculture systems in the mining-affected Hemgir block of Odisha.
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited is a major coal-producing subsidiary of Coal India Limited operating extensive open-cast and underground mining operations across Odisha. The Sundargarh District Administration serves as the local government body managing public administration, infrastructure, and rural development in the region.
The water restoration packages incorporate embankment stabilization, pathway development, groundwater recharge systems, and public amenities aligned with federal water conservation guidelines. Concurrently, the aquaculture program supports over 700 local agricultural workers and farmer-producer organization members by constructing 50 new ponds, rehabilitating 20 existing sites, and establishing women-led fish seed production facilities alongside a dedicated Custom Hiring Centre and Aqua Business School.
This capital deployment highlights a structured approach toward environmental remediation and economic diversification in heavy mining corridors. For local agricultural communities, rural planners, and state infrastructure agencies, transforming industrial impact zones through sustainable water management and agricultural support creates long-term livelihood resilience beyond the primary extraction economy.
