INDIA —A major expansion in India's maritime infrastructure is underway following an agreement between Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Ltd. (NSHIPML) to establish a mega shipbuilding facility at Dighi Port in Raigad district. The 270 billion INR project aims to establish India's largest shipyard under the Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster Development Plan, featuring an annual capacity of at least 2 million gross tonnes.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is a public sector enterprise operating under the Ministry of Defence, primarily engaged in building submarines and naval warships for the Indian Navy alongside commercial platforms. The new cluster will expand the company's scope, accommodating commercial vessel production, ship repairs, recycling, and warship manufacturing.
This initiative directly addresses India's strategic push to expand domestic commercial ship construction and align with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. Maharashtra expects the Dighi cluster to fulfill roughly 40 percent of the national shipbuilding target, positioning the region as a primary industrial node for global maritime trade.
The establishment of this infrastructure will stimulate the broader industrial ecosystem, generating substantial demand for domestic marine equipment manufacturers, steel suppliers, and supply chain vendors. Industrial execution is scheduled to begin after securing regulatory permissions, with construction projected to take approximately three years.
For regional economic stakeholders and global trade operators, the hub creates significant capacity for maritime maintenance, repair, and overhaul services. The facility is forecasted to generate 15,000 direct positions and 75,000 indirect jobs, substantially upgrading specialized engineering skills and coastal industrial activity in the state.
