Maire’s Nextchem subsidiary KT Tech has been awarded an early engineering and equipment supply contract for a 60,000-tonnes-per-year SAF plant in North Sumatra. The facility will process palm oil mill effluent and used cooking oil using proprietary NX PTU™ and NX SAF™ BIO technologies.

MAIRE has announced that its subsidiary Nextchem, through KT Tech, has secured a contract for early engineering works and proprietary equipment supply for a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant under development in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, according to company disclosures. The facility is designed to produce 60,000 tonnes per year of SAF, utilizing palm oil mill effluent (POME) as the primary feedstock alongside certified used cooking oil.

The project will employ Nextchem’s proprietary NX PTU™ and NX SAF™ BIO technologies, which have already been licensed for the initiative. The early engineering scope is intended to support the final investment decision (FID) for the project.

The contract positions MAIRE’s technology portfolio in Southeast Asia’s emerging SAF market, where feedstock availability, particularly POME from Indonesia’s extensive palm oil industry offers a cost-competitive pathway for biofuel production. Unlike crop-based feedstocks, POME is a waste stream, potentially improving the project’s carbon intensity profile and eligibility for sustainability incentives. The use of local resources also reduces supply chain risks associated with imported feedstocks.

For aviation fuel suppliers and airlines operating in Asia, the project signals growing regional capacity for drop-in SAF production. Indonesia’s push to monetize palm oil waste aligns with broader biofuel mandates, potentially attracting further investment in conversion technologies. Engineering and equipment providers focused on hydroprocessing and pretreatment systems may see increased demand as similar projects advance toward FID. Stakeholders including palm oil mill operators, waste collection networks, and certification bodies for used cooking oil stand to benefit from feedstock supply arrangements.

MAIRE is an Italian engineering and technology group operating in the energy transition sector.

Nextchem is MAIRE’s subsidiary focused on sustainable technology solutions, including biofuel and circular chemistry processes.
