Marvell Technology acquires Polariton to integrate plasmonics into AI data center interconnects

Marvell Technology has finalized the acquisition of Polariton Technologies to secure advanced plasmonic-based silicon photonics. This tactical move targets the 3.2T connectivity frontier, addressing the power and bandwidth constraints currently facing artificial intelligence workloads and cloud infrastructure scaling.

Marvell Technology, Inc., a prominent designer of semiconductor infrastructure for high-speed data movement, has announced the acquisition of Polariton Technologies, as disclosed in official company statements. Polariton is a specialist in plasmonic-based modulation, a technology that utilizes surface plasmon polaritons to achieve faster signaling and higher density than traditional silicon photonics. This integration is designed to bolster Marvell’s optical roadmap, specifically for ZR and ZR+ coherent interconnects used in long-haul and data center interconnect (DCI) applications.

The acquisition is a response to the massive surge in bandwidth requirements triggered by artificial intelligence. As the industry transitions from 1.6T to 3.2T speeds, conventional optical components face physical and thermal limits. Plasmonics allows for massively parallel links with significantly lower energy consumption per bit.
