SPAIN —MBDA has signed a framework agreement with the Spanish Navy covering the supply of three SIMBAD-RC anti-missile systems. The equipment will be integrated into active naval units as part of Spain’s efforts to strengthen the fleet’s ability to protect vessels from missile and aerial threats.
The agreement introduces an anti-missile capability that the Spanish Navy does not currently possess. Its deployment is intended to improve the self-defence of naval platforms against a range of threats, including anti-ship missiles, sea-skimming missiles, aircraft and drones. SIMBAD-RC can function either as a vessel’s primary self-defence layer or alongside other onboard defence systems.
SIMBAD-RC is based on the MISTRAL missile and is designed for short-range naval air-defence applications. Its architecture allows operation by a single operator and is intended for continuous use across different weather conditions. The system therefore addresses a growing requirement for layered protection of naval assets as fleets face increasingly diverse aerial and missile threats.
For Spain’s defence sector, the agreement expands the range of self-protection capabilities available to the Navy while creating a direct equipment relationship between the service and MBDA. The integration of the systems into operational vessels will also involve naval installation and support requirements associated with introducing a new defensive capability into the fleet.
For defence suppliers and investors, the agreement illustrates continued spending on naval survivability and short-range air-defence systems in Europe. Demand for shipborne protection against missiles and unmanned aircraft is being shaped by the increasing use of low-cost drones alongside more sophisticated anti-ship weapons. The Spanish order could therefore support further opportunities for naval air-defence equipment, integration and sustainment within Spain and the wider European defence market.
