IRELAND —Medtronic has secured international distribution rights for Cornerstone Robotics' Sentire surgical system through an investment valued at approximately $700 million. The agreement gives Medtronic the right to commercialize the platform across select non-U.S. jurisdictions where regulatory approvals are already in place, including Europe, China and Singapore.
This dual-platform commercial approach directly addresses the capital expenditure constraints and varied clinical preferences that have traditionally hindered widespread automation in surgical suites. By pairing its proprietary Hugo system with the newly integrated Sentire technology, Medtronic broadens its addressable target market across soft-tissue procedural categories, including gynecologic, urologic, thoracic, and general surgeries.
The partnership highlights a broader structural transformation in the medical device sector, where global healthcare technology leaders are increasingly leveraging external innovation to accelerate market deployment. Expanding surgical automation into mid-tier medical centers requires flexible operational and pricing models, enabling health systems outside the United States to adopt advanced technological solutions while managing procedural expenditures.
Medtronic, an Ireland-headquartered medical technology firm, develops and manufactures therapeutic solutions and medical devices for cardiac, surgical, and chronic care conditions across more than 150 countries. Cornerstone Robotics, founded in Hong Kong with primary operations and manufacturing facilities in mainland China, specializes in developing minimally invasive surgical platforms.
