Meta has initiated construction of a $1 billion data center in Oklahoma to strengthen its AI computing capacity. The move reflects intensifying competition among major technology firms to secure scalable infrastructure amid rising scrutiny over energy consumption and environmental impact.

Meta Platforms has commenced construction of a large-scale data center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with an investment exceeding $1 billion, according to company disclosures. The facility, spanning more than 2 million square feet, will be the company’s first in the state and part of its broader expansion of AI-driven infrastructure.

The development highlights the growing urgency among major technology firms to secure high-performance computing resources required for advanced artificial intelligence systems. As AI workloads become more complex, companies are accelerating investments in data centers to maintain competitive positioning and ensure long-term processing capacity.

The project is expected to generate over 1,000 construction jobs at peak activity and around 100 permanent operational roles once completed. State authorities indicated that Oklahoma’s energy surplus and cost structure were key factors in attracting the investment, while Meta confirmed it will independently cover water and wastewater service costs associated with the facility.

For the broader industry, the expansion underscores increasing pressure on energy infrastructure and sustainability frameworks, as hyperscale data centers demand significant power and water resources. This may intensify regulatory scrutiny and influence future site selection strategies across regions offering reliable, low-cost energy.

Meta Platforms, headquartered in California, operates major social media and digital communication platforms and has been scaling its global data infrastructure to support AI development. The Tulsa facility will become its 28th data center in the United States and 32nd globally, reinforcing its long-term investment in AI capabilities and digital ecosystem growth.
