Microsoft commits USD 50 billion to Global South AI infrastructure amid warning of widening economic divide

Microsoft has announced plans to invest USD 50 billion by decade-end to expand artificial intelligence access across the Global South. The commitment, paired with new skilling targets and localized evaluation tools, responds to data showing AI adoption in developing economies trails the Global North by a factor of nearly two.

Microsoft will direct USD 50 billion toward expanding AI infrastructure and accessibility across the Global South through 2030, according to an official company disclosure. The investment blueprint was outlined alongside internal data indicating that AI adoption rates in the Global North are approximately double those observed in developing economies. Executives warned that the disparity, if left unaddressed, could entrench economic inequality in a manner comparable to past infrastructure gaps.

The company disclosed that it invested over USD 8 billion in data center infrastructure serving the Global South during its most recent fiscal year, spanning projects in India, Mexico, Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. New initiatives include the 'Elevate for Educators' program, which targets strengthening AI capabilities among two million teachers across more than 200,000 schools, vocational institutes, and higher education institutions in India. The program is expected to extend AI learning opportunities to approximately eight million students through partnerships with national education and workforce training authorities. Microsoft has also set a global target of equipping 20 million people with AI skills by 2028, with an India-specific goal of reaching 20 million individuals by 2030. The company reported that 5.6 million people in India were trained during 2025.

On the research front, Microsoft is developing a community-centered AI evaluation framework called Samiksh in collaboration with Indian organizations, designed to incorporate local languages and cultural contexts that English-centric testing often misses. India currently hosts 24 million developers on GitHub, the second-largest developer community on the platform and the fastest-growing among the top 30 global economies. The disparity in AI adoption carries material consequences for economic development trajectories. Regions with lower penetration risk being locked out of productivity gains, while those receiving infrastructure investment stand to capture higher-value digital services activity.

For enterprises operating in or sourcing from the Global South, the infrastructure buildout may lower latency and compliance barriers while expanding addressable markets for AI-enabled products. The emphasis on multilingual model evaluation also signals that AI governance frameworks are increasingly being shaped outside traditional Western regulatory centers.

For investors and technology firms, India's developer density and policy receptiveness position it as a strategic hub for AI deployment and talent sourcing, though infrastructure gaps and skills shortages remain binding constraints in other targeted regions.
