ITALY —Midea Group has finalized the acquisition of a controlling stake in Esaote, an Italian developer of medical diagnostic imaging systems. Under the new ownership structure, Esaote will operate as an independent entity within the Midea Healthcare unit, maintaining its corporate headquarters in Genoa alongside research, development, and production centers across Italy and the Netherlands. CEO Franco Fontana will continue to lead the organization.
Esaote specializes in ultrasound, dedicated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, and healthcare information technology solutions. Midea Group, headquartered in Foshan, China, is a global technology corporation that manufactures industrial equipment and home appliances while expanding its healthcare technology division, which provides digital radiography, computed tomography, high-field MRI, and digital subtraction angiography systems.
This cross-border transaction reflects growing consolidation within the global medical device sector, where diversified industrial conglomerates are acquiring specialized diagnostic manufacturers to build comprehensive healthcare ecosystems. By uniting Esaote's specialized diagnostic focus with Midea’s extensive manufacturing infrastructure and capital resources, the transaction accelerates research and development timelines while optimizing supply chain efficiencies across international markets.
The integration provides Midea with an established European operational base and an expanded product line to compete against dominant global healthcare equipment vendors. For medical institutions and procurement networks, the unified portfolio presents a broader selection of diagnostic tools, potentially lowering technology adoption costs and increasing access to advanced imaging solutions in emerging and established healthcare markets.
