The Ministry of Defence has awarded contracts worth INR 538.66 billion to Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Goa Shipyard for constructing eight Next Generation Corvettes. This initiative advances indigenous naval capabilities, stimulates domestic shipbuilding, and projects substantial employment generation across ancillary manufacturing sectors over the next decade.

INDIA —The Ministry of Defence formally executed agreements valued at INR 538.66 billion with Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers and Goa Shipyard to deliver eight Next Generation Corvettes to the Indian Navy. Finalized in New Delhi, the arrangement designates the former to manufacture five vessels and the latter to produce the remaining three. This procurement represents a structural shift in domestic defense acquisition, marking the inaugural initiative where warships are entirely designed by naval architects and built by defense public sector undertakings chosen via competitive bidding.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers operates as a premier defense public sector enterprise specializing in the design and construction of warships and auxiliary vessels for national maritime forces. Goa Shipyard functions as a strategic shipbuilding facility focused on advanced naval platforms, coast guard vessels, and offshore patrol crafts, serving as a critical node in the national maritime defense infrastructure.

This development significantly elevates the operational readiness of the naval forces by introducing platforms equipped with advanced missile systems, integrated sensor suites, and multidomain warfare capabilities. The vessels are engineered to secure maritime trade corridors, execute antisubmarine and antisurface operations, and reinforce littoral combat readiness. Beyond tactical advantages, the program catalyzes the domestic maritime industrial base by mandating the integration of locally sourced materials and technologies, thereby deepening supply chain resilience and reducing reliance on foreign defense imports.

For investors and industrial stakeholders, the project signals sustained capital deployment into the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem. The execution phase is projected to create 7.2 million person-days of direct employment within shipyard facilities and 46 million person-days across micro, small, and medium enterprises over a ten-year horizon. This multiplier effect underscores a broader policy trajectory favoring domestic procurement, offering long-term revenue visibility for allied engineering, metallurgy, and electronics suppliers participating in the naval supply chain.
