Mitsubishi Heavy Industries wins Tuas South incinerator retrofit contract as Singapore prioritizes waste infrastructure resilience

Singapore’s NEA has selected Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific for boiler retrofit work at the Tuas South Incineration Plant, a project designed to stabilize processing capacity and prolong the asset’s operating life. The upgrade underscores continued investment in waste treatment reliability as the city-state manages long-term disposal needs.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. has secured a contract from Singapore’s National Environment Agency to carry out boiler retrofit work at the Tuas South Incineration Plant in western Singapore. The project is aimed at improving the stability of the plant’s stoker-type incinerator and extending the facility’s service life, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027.

The plant was originally designed and built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and entered service in 2000. It has a daily treatment capacity of 3,000 tons and remains under the operation and maintenance oversight of the NEA. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering, another group company, will execute the retrofit work.

The contract matters because Singapore’s waste treatment network depends on dependable incineration capacity to support land-scarce disposal infrastructure and maintain continuity in municipal waste management. Any effort to extend the operating life of an existing plant can reduce near-term replacement pressure while helping safeguard system reliability. For contractors, equipment suppliers, and public-sector operators, the project highlights ongoing demand for refurbishment rather than full replacement in mature industrial infrastructure. It also signals opportunities in environmental engineering, lifecycle asset management, and public utility maintenance across Southeast Asia.
