The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has reached a major construction milestone on the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension project after completing the installation of two sections of the project's main girder launcher. According to official updates, each launcher section measures 59 metres in length and weighs approximately 160 metric tonnes, enabling the next phase of elevated superstructure construction.
The project involves the development of a 13.90-kilometre, six-lane elevated corridor extending from Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar in Thane. The alignment will originate from the existing Eastern Freeway and pass through Ramabai and Kamraj Nagar before connecting key transport nodes including Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), Airoli and Mulund. The corridor will ultimately integrate with the Anand Nagar-Saket Elevated Road near Mulund, creating a continuous high-capacity urban road network.
The infrastructure package also includes a 6+6 lane toll plaza near the Navghar Flyover and dedicated two-lane entry and exit ramps for southbound traffic at strategic locations such as Mulund Check Naka, Airoli Junction and Vikhroli Junction. These additions are intended to improve traffic distribution and facilitate smoother access to the elevated corridor.
The development is significant for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as it is expected to improve east-west and north-south connectivity, reduce travel times between Mumbai and Thane, and enhance the efficiency of one of the region's busiest transport corridors. The project is also expected to support freight movement, commercial activity and long-term urban expansion by easing congestion on existing arterial roads.

The engineering, procurement and construction contract has been awarded to Navayuga Engineering Company Limited, while Sheladia Associates Inc., in association with SMEC International Pty. Ltd., has been appointed as the Project Management Consultant. The project carries an estimated investment of INR 26.82 billion and is scheduled for completion over 48 months, including 12 months for design and environmental clearances followed by 36 months of construction. Progress on the elevated corridor is expected to generate opportunities across the engineering, construction materials, transportation and infrastructure services sectors while strengthening long-term investment in the Mumbai metropolitan transport network.
