MOROCCO; SWITZERLAND —Swiss solar fuel developer Synhelion has formalised an agreement with the Moroccan government to establish a commercial-scale synthetic fuel manufacturing plant in the southern province of Tan-Tan, located within the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. The targeted output for the newly planned facility is set at 100,000 tons of renewable aviation and automotive fuels per year. To facilitate the operational rollout, the enterprise has secured land reservation rights for the project site and registered a regional corporate unit, Synhelion Morocco, which has obtained Casablanca Finance City status.
Synhelion is a Switzerland-based clean technology enterprise that develops solar-driven process heat technologies to convert biogenic waste and renewable energy into drop-in synthetic fuels, including gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The Ministry of Investment, Convergence, and Evaluation of Public Policies of Morocco is the government entity responsible for driving foreign investment strategies, aligning national economic policies, and promoting sustainable industrial infrastructure across the Kingdom.
This initiative reflects a strategic push toward commercialising zero-emission liquid fuels capable of directly substituting traditional petroleum products without requiring engine modifications or new distribution infrastructure. By utilizing regional solar radiation and renewable resources, the project advances global efforts to decarbonize heavy transport sectors such as aviation and maritime shipping, which face significant technical barriers to direct electrification.
For North Africa, the development reinforces the region's trajectory as an emerging export hub for green hydrogen derivatives and synthetic hydrocarbons destined for European markets. The establishment of large-scale renewable fuel infrastructure in Morocco highlights growing institutional support for capital-intensive cleantech ventures, offering energy investors a viable framework for industrial-scale decarbonization projects across developing markets.
