Nagaland has executed a 25-year power purchase agreement for a 20 MW solar facility in Mon district, marking its inaugural private independent power producer project aimed at meeting rising electricity demands and regional sustainability targets.

A long-term commercial framework has been established to integrate independent solar generation into the electricity grid of Nagaland, following the execution of a 25-year power purchase agreement between state energy authorities and Tvaksas Renewable. Under the contract, the private developer will construct a 20 MW utility-scale solar generation plant at Lapa Lampong village within the Tizit subdivision of Mon district. The Nagaland Electricity Regulatory Commission has fixed the off-take price at ₹4.12 per unit, with initial phase commissioning scheduled within a 20-month window. The project anticipates an annual yield of approximately 35 million units, structured to mitigate carbon emissions by roughly 25,000 tonnes annually while laying the foundation for a potential 100 MW regional capacity expansion by the developer.

This initiative represents the first private independent power producer setup in Nagaland, establishing a benchmark for private capital participation in a state traditionally reliant on external grid supply. By securing a localized generation source, regional grid operators aim to bridge the gap between current peak demand of 203 MW and projected loads expected to reach 482 MW by the 2034-35 fiscal period. The transition to short-gestation solar assets addresses urgent supply deficits faster than conventional thermal or large hydroelectric infrastructure, improving energy security in the northeastern border region.

The agreement underscores a broader shift within regional policy frameworks toward meeting state-level Renewable Consumption Obligations while supporting national targets of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. For industrial users, power utilities, and commercial entities across Nagaland, the insertion of fixed-rate solar tariffs offers predictable input costs and buffers distribution networks against bulk power market volatility. In addition to power stabilization, the construction and operational phases are designed to generate localized technical employment, stimulating infrastructure development in Mon district.

For energy developers and institutional investors, the successful closing of this regulated off-take arrangement demonstrates the viability of private sector power project financing in Nagaland. The Department of Power Nagaland oversees the state's transmission, distribution, and grid planning operations to ensure uninterrupted power supply. Tvaksas Renewable is a private renewable energy developer focused on expanding solar power infrastructure across emerging regional markets in India.
