FINLAND —Nordic construction firm NCC has been awarded a contract valued at approximately SEK 170 million by the City of Helsinki to execute a major renovation of a historic educational complex in central Helsinki. The project encompasses a heritage-listed elementary school and preschool housed within a structure dating back to 1844, which was converted for educational use in the 1980s and has not experienced substantial modernizations since.
Historic structural retrofits in culturally protected zones present specialized engineering complexities, requiring contractors to balance modern building standards with the preservation of architectural heritage. The mandate involves extensive structural remediation, including the replacement of ground-floor foundations, interior ceilings, building installations, window restoration, and facade conservation, alongside a complete redesign of the surrounding outdoor environment.
This initiative directly impacts the municipal public works sector, urban real estate development, and regional architectural preservation stakeholders in Finland. The upgrade addresses aging municipal infrastructure, ensuring that historical public assets comply with contemporary health, safety, and functional standards for students and faculty.
For investors and corporate stakeholders, the contract strengthens NCC’s order book within its building business segment, adding to its regional backlog starting in the fourth quarter of 2026. NCC AB operates as a prominent construction and property development company across the Nordic region, employing thousands of professionals and maintaining a portfolio spanning building contracting and commercial real estate. Execution of the project is set to begin in early 2027, with final completion targeted for late 2028.
