GREECE —Nexans has signed a subcontract with Hellenic Cables, working in consortium with Asso.subsea, for the supply of 420 km of mass-impregnated (MI) 110 kV cables for Greece’s Corinth-Kos high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnection. The agreement covers a dedicated cable package within a wider electricity transmission development designed to connect the Dodecanese islands with the Greek mainland.
The overall interconnection has a planned transmission capacity of 1 GW at 320 kV and includes approximately 1,260 km of subsea cables and 30 km of land cables. The project was awarded to Hellenic Cables by Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO). Nexans' 420 km supply package represents a significant portion of the specialized cable requirements for the development.
Preparatory work has commenced at Nexans' MI cable manufacturing facilities, alongside seabed survey activities. Production-line utilization is expected to begin towards the end of 2026 and continue through 2027 until mid-2028. This schedule creates a multi-year manufacturing workload and requires coordination between cable production, marine surveys and the wider installation programme.
The interconnection is intended to address electricity transmission constraints associated with geographically separated island networks. Connecting the Dodecanese to mainland Greece will improve the transfer of electricity between the two systems, strengthen supply security and provide greater flexibility in managing regional electricity demand. The additional transmission capacity can also support the integration of renewable generation into the interconnected grid.
The contract has implications for the European subsea cable supply chain, particularly manufacturers with capabilities in high-voltage and mass-impregnated cable technology. Demand for specialized transmission cables is increasing as grid operators develop longer-distance interconnections, connect islands and offshore energy resources, and expand cross-regional electricity transfer capacity. The project also generates activity for marine engineering, seabed surveying and offshore cable installation contractors.
Nexans is a France-based manufacturer of electrical cables and related electrification infrastructure, including systems for high-voltage power transmission. Hellenic Cables is a Greek cable manufacturer supplying energy and telecommunications infrastructure, while Asso.subsea specializes in subsea engineering and installation services. IPTO is responsible for operating and developing Greece's electricity transmission network.
For suppliers and investors, the development demonstrates the scale and duration of manufacturing commitments associated with major European grid infrastructure programmes. Nexans' production schedule provides visibility of industrial activity through mid-2028, while the wider project creates opportunities for companies involved in cable manufacturing, offshore engineering and electricity network development across Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean.
