Swedish open banking fintech Trustly has secured binding equity commitments exceeding USD 40 million from Nordic Capital and Alfvén & Didrikson. The capital injection will finance the deployment of artificial intelligence capabilities across its cross-border real-time payment network.

SWEDEN —Nordic Capital and Alfvén & Didrikson have executed legally binding equity commitment letters exceeding USD 40 million to back the next expansion phase of Trustly. The transaction is scheduled for completion in November 2026, with the offer being extended to existing shareholders to participate before the final equity total is determined.

The fresh capital will be directed toward accelerating the development of real-time financial intelligence capabilities built on top of Trustly's proprietary open banking infrastructure. By integrating artificial intelligence directly into its account-to-account payment network, the firm aims to convert transaction processing data into predictive insights that assist enterprise merchants with risk mitigation, customer retention and acquisition strategies.

Founded in 2008, Trustly is a Swedish payment institution supervised by the Financial Supervisory Authority, operating across Europe and North America. The open banking infrastructure provider connects over 9,000 enterprise merchants to more than 650 million consumers through partnerships with 12,000 banking institutions across 30 global markets, having processed over USD 100 billion in transactions in 2025.

This capital deployment highlights an industry-wide pivot among account-to-account payment providers seeking to differentiate beyond baseline transaction clearing. Enhancing payment rails with data-driven machine learning tools addresses growing enterprise demand for integrated fraud prevention, instant identity verification, and real-time liquidity management across digital platforms.

For institutional investors and digital merchants in e-commerce, gaming, travel, and financial services, the investment strengthens open banking's position as a direct alternative to legacy card networks. The inclusion of predictive intelligence is expected to lower operating costs, boost settlement speeds, and optimize conversion efficiency across high-volume digital payment ecosystems in North America and Europe.
