NTPC Renewable Energy commissions 165 MW at Khavda-II solar project in Gujarat

Federal Reserve Building

NTPC Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of state-owned NTPC Ltd, has commenced commercial power supply from a 165 MW segment of its Khavda-II solar project in Gujarat. This expansion increases the NTPC Group’s total installed capacity to 88,709 MW, underscoring the company’s ongoing transition toward a larger renewable energy footprint in India.

According to official disclosures, NTPC Renewable Energy initiated commercial operations for a 165 MW portion of the 1,200 MW Khavda-II Solar PV project on March 19, 2026. This commissioning represents the fourth phase of the Gujarat-based installation. NTPC Ltd is India’s largest state-owned power utility, primarily focused on large-scale electricity generation to support national energy security.

This development is significant as it highlights the accelerating scale of India’s decarbonization efforts within one of the world's largest renewable energy parks. The incremental addition reflects a strategic pivot for the state-run giant, moving from traditional thermal dominance toward a diversified green energy portfolio. The NTPC Group's total commercial capacity now stands at 87,629 MW, while its dedicated green arm, NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), has reached a commercial capacity exceeding 9,562 MW. For the broader energy industry, this milestone reinforces the viability of ultra-mega solar parks in arid regions. Such projects are critical for meeting the national target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

The successful phased rollout at Khavda likely provides a template for managing the logistical and grid-connectivity challenges inherent in massive infrastructure deployments. Strategic implications for investors and stakeholders center on the growth trajectory of NGEL. The steady conversion of installed capacity into commercial supply signals operational efficiency and a maturing pipeline of renewable assets. Furthermore, the expansion in Gujarat strengthens the regional supply chain for solar components and may influence future interstate power transmission policies as more intermittent renewable energy enters the national grid.
