New York State has awarded more than USD 6.2 million to the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County under its NY SWIMS initiative, supporting a USD 7.8 million redevelopment of aging aquatic facilities. The project highlights state-backed investment in public health infrastructure and year-round community recreation assets.

New York State has approved over USD 6.2 million in funding for the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County to upgrade and expand its aquatic center, according to a statement from State Sen. Lea Webb. The grant forms part of the USD 150 million NY SWIMS program, a statewide initiative designed to broaden access to safe public swimming facilities, particularly in underserved areas.

The Ithaca-based YMCA, a regional nonprofit providing fitness, youth development and aquatics programming, will undertake a USD 7.8 million redevelopment that includes construction of a new programming pool, modernization of mechanical systems, additional lap lanes and full renovation of locker rooms. The organization is required to contribute approximately USD 1.6 million as a local funding match and plans to raise the balance through grants, corporate partnerships and a public capital campaign. The investment addresses mounting demand, with aquatics participation rising significantly in recent years and placing strain on infrastructure dating back to the mid-1980s. Beyond recreational use, the facility supports swim instruction, lifeguard certification and water-based wellness programs.

For construction firms, engineering consultancies and equipment suppliers, the phased project presents opportunities in public-sector infrastructure upgrades. More broadly, the funding underscores growing policy emphasis on preventive health, drowning prevention and inclusive community amenities—areas that could attract further capital deployment across New York’s municipal and nonprofit recreation sector.
