New South Wales has begun construction of the AUD 900 million Blind Creek Solar Farm and Battery project near Bungendore, combining large-scale solar generation with grid storage. Backed by institutional investors, the development aims to support energy security, regional employment and the state’s transition away from ageing coal-fired power infrastructure.
Construction has commenced on the Blind Creek Solar Farm and Battery project in New South Wales, a large-scale renewable energy development designed to deliver firm electricity supply to the state’s grid.
The project combines a 300 MW solar generation facility with a 243 MW / 486 MWh battery energy storage system and is scheduled to become operational in 2028, according to official announcements.
The development will connect to the transmission corridor between Sydney and Canberra through a dedicated substation, allowing solar power generated during daylight hours to be stored and dispatched during periods of peak demand. This integrated design is intended to support system reliability as New South Wales progressively retires ageing coal-fired power plants. Investment in the project comes from a mix of domestic and international institutional capital, including Australian superannuation funds Hostplus and Rest, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, Westpac Private Bank and Dutch pension investor APG. The participation of long-term institutional investors highlights increasing capital flows into utility-scale renewable infrastructure in Australia.
Octopus Australia, the developer behind the project, is an investment and asset management firm focused on renewable energy and infrastructure across the Australian market. The company has been expanding its portfolio of solar, wind and storage projects to meet rising electricity demand and decarbonisation targets.
At peak construction, the project is expected to support around 300 full-time equivalent jobs, with a significant share sourced from surrounding regional communities. The facility has also been designed to allow agricultural activity, including sheep grazing, to continue alongside energy production.
For energy markets and investors, the project reflects a broader shift toward hybrid renewable assets that combine generation with storage, a model increasingly viewed as critical for maintaining grid stability while scaling intermittent renewable capacity.
