Oil and Natural Gas Corporation plans to invest INR 1000 billion over the next five years in offshore deepwater exploration, targeting 87 new wells to counter domestic production declines and support national energy security objectives.

INDIA India's state-owned energy explorer, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), is ramping up its offshore strategy with a five-year, INR 1000 billion investment program dedicated to deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration. The initiative targets the drilling of 87 exploratory wells across deepwater offshore basins to identify new hydrocarbon reserves and bolster domestic energy output.

This substantial capital outlay comes as the organization seeks to reverse declining production rates in existing fields and secure long-term resources. The expansion aligns with national initiatives designed to accelerate exploration activity, backed by recently introduced policy frameworks and financial incentives totalizing INR 840 billion aimed at unlocking previously restricted offshore zones.

The focused drive toward deepwater energy extraction carries significant strategic implications for energy security and domestic supply chains. Capital investments of this magnitude are expected to stimulate activity across maritime logistics, subsea engineering services, and specialized equipment manufacturing, while supporting national goals to reduce dependence on crude oil imports.

For market participants and institutional investors, the planned exploratory drilling signals sustained capital deployment within the upstream oil and gas sector. Increased offshore activity will likely generate long-term procurement opportunities for technology providers specializing in high-pressure, deep-sea exploration and subsea infrastructure development.

ONGC is a public sector crude oil and natural gas company managed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in India. Headquartered in New Delhi, it is the largest government-owned exploration and production enterprise in the country, contributing significantly to national hydrocarbon output.
