OnPath Energy has entered an option agreement with Wilson Forest Products for three onshore wind farms in South Lanarkshire: Bankend Rig II, Bankend Rig III, and Hawkwood, totalling 121 MW across 18 turbines. The projects, part of a £1 billion investment in Southern Scotland, will power approximately 150,000 homes and follow planning consents secured in 2025.
OnPath Energy is progressing plans to invest approximately £1 billion in Southern Scotland over the next five years by partnering with Wilson Forest Products on three new onshore wind farms in South Lanarkshire, according to an official announcement. OnPath has entered into an option agreement with the family-owned Scottish firm for the Bankend Rig II, Bankend Rig III, and Hawkwood Wind Farm projects. The three wind farms include a total of 18 turbines with a combined capacity of 121 MW, enough to meet the annual electricity needs of around 150,000 homes.
OnPath Energy is owned by Brookfield Asset Management, the world's largest dedicated transition investor with over 46,000 MW of operating renewable energy capacity worldwide. The two companies have previously worked together on the development of OnPath's nearby Mill Rig Wind Farm, adjacent to the three projects and expected to be fully operational later this year. Planning consents for Bankend Rig II and Bankend Rig III were secured by Wilson Forest Products in 2025, with Hawkwood recently approved by South Lanarkshire Council subject to concluding legal agreements.
This development matters for Scotland's renewable energy sector, where new onshore wind farms create jobs, improve security of energy supply, and help reduce consumer electricity bills in the long term. The option agreement gives OnPath the right, subject to project milestones and conditions, to acquire a majority stake in the three projects. OnPath acquired the Pates Hill Wind Farm in West Lothian last year and is expecting to bring forward several major new development proposals in England this year.
For the renewable energy industry, OnPath is working towards becoming the UK's leading renewable energy developer, exploring potential new project locations across Scotland, England, and Wales. The three project sites lie to the south west of OnPath Energy's Kype Muir Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire. Stakeholders including local communities and businesses stand to benefit from hundreds of millions of pounds invested through the supply chain of local businesses.
