Petrobras selects SBM Offshore for twin FPSO developments in Brazil’s Sergipe-Alagoas basin

SBM Offshore has secured contracts from Petrobras to design, construct and operate two floating production, storage and offloading units for offshore fields in Brazil’s Sergipe-Alagoas basin. The projects are expected to expand oil and gas output, strengthen domestic gas supply and support long-term offshore energy infrastructure development.

SBM Offshore has been awarded contracts by Petrobras for the development of two floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units, designated SEAP-I (P-81) and SEAP-II (P-87), for deployment in Brazil’s offshore Sergipe-Alagoas basin. Under the arrangement, Petrobras-led consortia will retain ownership of the vessels, while SBM Offshore will operate and maintain them under separate contracts for an initial period of 6.5 years, according to official disclosures.

The projects are scheduled for delivery in 2030 and 2031 and will each be capable of producing up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day. The facilities will also provide substantial gas-processing and water-injection capabilities, supporting production from deepwater reservoirs located approximately 80 to 100 kilometers offshore in water depths of around 2,500 meters.

The development is significant because both FPSOs will be connected to export infrastructure that enables associated gas to be transported directly to shore. This approach is expected to increase the commercial utilization of natural gas, reduce reliance on offshore flaring and reinjection, and enhance the overall economics of the fields.

The contracts reinforce continued investment in Brazil’s offshore energy sector, creating opportunities for engineering, construction, subsea services and operations contractors. For investors and industry participants, the projects highlight ongoing demand for advanced FPSO solutions and underscore Brazil’s position as one of the world’s most active deepwater oil and gas markets.

SBM Offshore is a Netherlands-based provider of floating offshore production systems and related services. Petrobras is Brazil’s state-controlled energy company and one of the largest operators in the global deepwater oil and gas industry.
