AUSTRALIA; KOREA (SOUTH) —South Korean energy conglomerate POSCO INTERNATIONAL has entered the Australian renewable fuels sector by acquiring a strategic stake in Jet Zero Australia, joining existing financial backers Qantas Airways and Airbus in a 30 million dollar funding round. The capital raise coincides with the Queensland Government granting final development approvals for Project Ulysses, a commercial-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Renewable Diesel refinery planned for Townsville. Barrenjoey managed the equity raise, which will fund Front-End Engineering Design work as the venture moves toward a Final Investment Decision.
Jet Zero Australia is an onshore biofuel developer focused on establishing sovereign low-carbon liquid fuel production facilities, including flagship refinery developments in Townsville and Gladstone. The project developer aims to convert domestic agricultural feedstocks into certified drop-in aviation fuel and renewable diesel, targeting decarbonization within hard-to-abate transport segments.
This capital injection highlights rising international commercial interest in regional clean-energy hubs across Asia-Pacific. Securing environmental, regulatory, and cultural heritage clearances provides a viable pathway for Australia to transition from a raw feedstock exporter into a localized biofuel refining hub. Building domestic processing infrastructure enhances regional energy security, hedges against volatile global supply lines, and establishes alternative revenue streams for agricultural producers supply-chain wide.
The investment underscores how major airline operators, aerospace manufacturers, and multinational trading firms are combining balance sheets to accelerate low-carbon fuel supply chains. By locking in strategic alignment across feedstock procurement, infrastructure development, and long-term fuel off-take agreements, energy investors are positioning themselves to meet upcoming regulatory mandates and airline decarbonization targets across sovereign boundaries.
