INDIA —State agency Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL) has granted operational approval to power generator NTPC Limited (NTPC) to construct a 320-kilowatt concentrated solar power pilot facility at the Bhadla Solar Park in Rajasthan. The experimental setup utilizes ceramic-based thermal energy storage developed by US technology firm 247Solar to evaluate thermal power generation during off-peak and post-sunset hours.
NTPC Limited (NTPC) is India's largest state-owned electric utility enterprise, operating under the Ministry of Power to manage thermal, hydro, and renewable energy infrastructure. Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL) serves as the state-designated agency overseeing renewable energy expansion, policy execution, and solar park developments across Rajasthan.
The pilot installation uses high-temperature ceramic modules to capture and store solar thermal energy during daytime peak irradiance. During evening hours, the stored heat drives an air turbine to produce electricity dedicated to NTPC's internal and auxiliary plant consumption. Following regulatory approval, project partners will execute structural site surveys, geotechnical analyses, and preliminary technical feasibility assessments to benchmark performance against traditional chemical battery systems.
This pilot initiative carries strategic relevance for utility-scale solar integration and grid stability across South Asia. For renewable power producers, grid operators, and clean technology developers, validating thermal storage alternatives to lithium-ion batteries offers a pathway toward cost-effective, long-duration energy storage, enabling continuous baseload supply and improving evening peak load management.
