UNITED STATES OF AMERICA —Raytheon, a business segment of RTX, has been selected by the Office of Naval Research to spearhead an initiative aimed at enhancing the target-detection capabilities of naval radar systems. Under the terms of the agreement, the company's Advanced Technology division will design, test, and evaluate specialized signal and data-processing algorithms alongside targeted software modifications. These updates are intended to significantly expand operational detection ranges, boost system sensitivity, and elevate overall radar efficiency through extensive laboratory and field testing.
This initiative directly addresses the growing demand for cost-effective modernization pathways in military hardware. By relying on software-first upgrades rather than complete hardware overhauls, the defense sector can rapidly field mission-ready capabilities. The resulting enhancements are engineered to transition directly into the SPY-6 radar family and other future naval defense systems, allowing operators to identify smaller objects at greater distances and accelerate tactical decision-making processes.
The program builds upon prior research and development frameworks established by the Office of Naval Research, continuing extensive work in software-defined apertures and insights gained from earlier initiatives such as ASPIRE and STORM. These foundational efforts collectively support next-generation radar performance architectures for maritime defense operations.
Execution of the contract will take place across designated Raytheon facilities located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and Andover, Massachusetts, with project activities scheduled to run through 2031. Raytheon operates as a key business unit of RTX, a major global provider of integrated defense solutions, aerospace systems, and advanced technology products headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.
