SWEDEN —Rejlers has signed a four-year framework agreement with Gryaab, the wastewater treatment company serving the Gothenburg region of Sweden, to provide engineering consultancy and technical support across its water and wastewater treatment operations. The agreement establishes a basis for Rejlers to undertake assignments covering both existing facilities and future infrastructure development.
The scope includes process and mechanical engineering, structural and building engineering, electrical systems, plumbing, geotechnical services and water engineering. Rejlers will also provide project and design management, technical investigations, engineering assessments and support during construction, operation and maintenance. The multidisciplinary arrangement allows Gryaab to access expertise across different stages of infrastructure development rather than limiting the engagement to a single engineering discipline.
The agreement comes as Gryaab prepares for a substantial expansion of its wastewater treatment capacity. Its New Rya development programme includes the planned enlargement of Ryaverket, the region's principal wastewater treatment facility. The project is intended to increase the plant's capacity to serve approximately 1.3 million people, compared with around 800,000 in 2021. Completion of the expansion is targeted for 2036.
Increasing population coverage and stricter wastewater treatment requirements are creating additional demands on municipal water infrastructure across Sweden and the wider European market. The revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive introduces more demanding treatment standards, including measures addressing micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues. These requirements are expected to drive investment in treatment processes, plant upgrades, monitoring systems and supporting engineering infrastructure.
For Gryaab, the framework agreement provides access to technical resources needed to assess, design and implement upgrades while maintaining the performance of existing treatment operations. The combination of new capacity requirements and regulatory changes means that infrastructure planning must address both conventional wastewater volumes and the removal of additional pollutants.
Rejlers is a Nordic engineering and technical consultancy providing services across infrastructure, energy, industry and buildings. Its role under the agreement positions the company within Sweden's municipal water infrastructure investment market, where long-term treatment upgrades and regulatory compliance are generating demand for specialist engineering services.
The four-year arrangement creates opportunities for Rejlers to participate in multiple assignments associated with Gryaab's development and modernisation activities. However, the framework agreement does not disclose a total contract value or guarantee a specific volume of work. For engineering suppliers and infrastructure investors, the New Rya programme represents a longer-term pipeline of potential activity linked to capacity expansion, treatment technology improvements and environmental compliance in the Gothenburg region.
