Reliance Industries has received state approval to invest over $17 billion in a 1.5GW AI data centre cluster and captive solar storage in Visakhapatnam. The phased project, India’s largest such facility, aims to begin commercial operations by October 2028, intensifying competition in the region’s digital infrastructure market.
Reliance Industries’ proposed 1.5GW data centre cluster near Visakhapatnam’s Bhogapuram airport has been cleared by the Andhra Pradesh Investment Promotion Committee, according to official disclosures. The $17bn+ investment includes $13.2bn for the data centre facilities and $6.3bn for a linked renewable energy project with 9,000 MW-peak solar DC capacity.
Reliance has requested 935 acres for the cluster, plus land for a cable landing station and desalination plant. The first 500MW phase at Polipalli village targets commercial production by October 2028, followed by 1GW by 2030.
The development surpasses Google’s previously announced $15bn, 1GW project in the same region. Andhra Pradesh’s Data Centre Policy 4.0 offers incentives including 100% state GST reimbursement on capital goods and a 10% capital subsidy on machinery for projects above 300MW. The state aims for 6GW of hosting capacity.
Reliance’s entry, alongside Google, Sify, Digital Connexion, and Anant Raj Cloud, signals intensifying hyperscale competition. For enterprise clients, this expands high-density AI compute availability on India’s east coast. Equipment suppliers, renewable energy developers, and construction firms stand to gain from multi-year contracts. Policy certainty and land allocation will determine execution timelines.
