Raytheon has secured a contract from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to provide SeaRAM self-defense technology for the Australian Sea3000 General Purpose Frigate program. The agreement covers the first three vessels of an 11-ship modernization plan, with deliveries starting in 2028, highlighting increased maritime defense collaboration between Japan and the United States.

According to official disclosures, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has selected Raytheon to provide SeaRAM ship-defense systems for the Australian Navy's Sea3000 General Purpose Frigate program. The agreement involves the delivery of launchers, test vehicles, and technical support for the initial three vessels in the fleet. Production for these systems will take place in Louisville, Kentucky, with deliveries scheduled to begin in late 2028.

This modernization effort is critical for Australia as it moves to replace its retiring Anzac-class frigates with 11 upgraded Mogami-class vessels. By integrating Raytheon’s autonomous defense technology, the Royal Australian Navy enhances its capability to intercept supersonic missiles and other high-speed maritime threats. The move signals a robust shift toward standardized, high-tech defense hardware within the Indo-Pacific region. From an industrial perspective, this contract reinforces the strategic partnership between Japanese shipbuilders and American defense manufacturers. It highlights a growing trend of multinational cooperation in naval procurement, offering long-term opportunities for service and technical support providers.

Raytheon, a subsidiary of RTX, is a global leader in advanced defense solutions and sensors. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is a premier Japanese engineering firm and a key contractor for the country’s maritime defense platforms.
