FINLAND —Saab has entered into a contract with the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command for the delivery of its RBS 70 NG short-range air defence solution, with the initial order valued at SEK 1.2 billion. The agreement also provides a framework under which Finland can place further orders for RBS 70 NG equipment and related support services.
The RBS 70 NG is designed to counter aerial threats at short range and combines a laser-guided missile with an automatic target tracker and integrated night-fighting capability. These features are intended to improve the system’s ability to engage targets across different operating conditions while reducing vulnerabilities associated with conventional guidance methods.
For Finland, the procurement represents an upgrade of an air defence capability already in service. The Finnish Defence Forces has operated an earlier generation of the RBS 70 since 2008, making the new procurement an extension of an established equipment base rather than the introduction of an entirely new system family.
The order is relevant to Finland’s broader defence modernisation efforts as European militaries continue to strengthen layered air defence against a wider range of aerial threats. Demand for short-range systems has increased alongside requirements to protect military infrastructure, deployed forces and other critical assets from low-altitude and emerging airborne threats.
Saab is a Swedish defence and security company supplying systems and services across areas including air defence, weapons, surveillance and aerospace. The Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command manages defence materiel procurement and logistics for Finland’s armed forces. The latest agreement therefore links a major European defence supplier with Finland’s national military procurement organisation and could create additional revenue opportunities for Saab through follow-on equipment and sustainment orders.
