Saab expands German naval partnership with combat system integration contract for MEKO A-200 frigates

Saab has secured a SEK 8.7 billion contract from German naval defence company TKMS to supply and integrate combat systems, sensors and composite structures for four German Navy MEKO A-200 DEU class frigates. The programme strengthens Germany’s naval capabilities and deepens industrial cooperation between Swedish and German defence suppliers.

Saab has received an order from TKMS to deliver and integrate advanced naval systems for four MEKO A-200 DEU class frigates being built for the German Navy. The contract, valued at approximately SEK 8.7 billion, covers combat management technology, sensor systems and composite structures, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2032.

The frigates will be constructed in Germany under TKMS leadership as the prime contractor. The agreement also includes an option to support additional vessels through future integration and equipment requirements, potentially expanding Saab’s role in the wider naval modernisation programme.

The scope of Saab’s work includes its 9LV Combat System platform, including fire control and combat management capabilities, along with Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face long-range surveillance radar, Sea Giraffe 1X multi-mission radar and passive sensor technologies. These systems are designed to improve anti-air, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities for the German Navy.

The contract is strategically significant as Germany continues efforts to strengthen maritime defence capacity amid increased focus on naval readiness, regional security and protection of critical sea routes. The programme will support defence manufacturing activity in Germany while creating opportunities for technology suppliers involved in naval electronics, sensors and advanced materials.
