Saab has secured an approximately SEK 2 billion contract from France’s Naval Group to supply and integrate weapon control systems, missile capabilities and advanced sensors for four FDI frigates being built for Sweden. Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2034, strengthening Sweden’s naval combat and surveillance capabilities.

SWEDEN —Sweden’s naval modernisation programme will receive a substantial technology contribution from Saab under a new agreement with French shipbuilder Naval Group. The contract, valued at approximately SEK 2 billion, covers the supply and integration of combat management-related equipment, weapon systems and surveillance technologies for four FDI frigates destined for the Swedish Navy.

The equipment package includes Saab’s Weapon Control System, Ceros Fire Control Director, EOS 500 electro-optical sensor and RBS15 anti-ship missile. Additional systems comprise the Saab Lightweight Torpedo, Trackfire Remote Weapon Station and Sea Giraffe 1X lightweight multi-mission surveillance radar. Together, these technologies will support threat detection, target tracking, weapon engagement and defensive operations across different maritime environments.

Saab’s deliveries to Naval Group are scheduled to run from 2027 through 2034. The arrangement places Saab in the role of a major systems supplier within a French-led frigate construction programme, while Naval Group is responsible for the FDI vessels being delivered to Sweden. The integration of multiple Swedish-developed systems into the ships also establishes a cross-border industrial collaboration between the two defence companies.

The agreement is significant for Sweden’s maritime security requirements, particularly as naval forces increasingly need to address threats from surface vessels, submarines, missiles and asymmetric warfare capabilities. Combining radar, electro-optical surveillance, fire control and anti-ship weaponry is expected to provide the frigates with a broader operational capability across above-water and underwater threat environments.

For the European defence industry, the contract demonstrates the role of specialised suppliers in multinational naval procurement programmes. It also creates a delivery pipeline extending over several years, providing Saab with long-term defence systems business while supporting Naval Group’s execution of the Swedish frigate programme. The agreement reinforces industrial cooperation between France and Sweden and highlights opportunities for defence technology companies participating in Europe's naval capability expansion.

Saab is a Swedish defence and aerospace company operating across naval systems, surveillance, weapons, aviation and military technology. Naval Group is a French defence company specialising in the design, construction and maintenance of naval vessels and associated combat systems.
