FINLAND —Ren-Gas has selected Saipem to undertake the engineering, procurement, and fabrication of an enzymatic carbon capture plant for its upcoming synthetic methane production facility in Tampere, Finland. Under the agreement, Saipem will provide its proprietary Bluenzyme 200 unit alongside advisory support for installation, commissioning, and operational testing. The contract remains subject to the project reaching a final investment decision.
Saipem S.p.A. is an Italian multinational engineering and construction services company specializing in energy infrastructure, offshore drilling, and major decarbonization projects globally.
Integrated directly into the Tampere power-to-gas plant, the carbon capture technology will capture process emissions to supply necessary carbon feedstock for synthetic fuel production. The facility aims to generate approximately 0.2 TWh of renewable e-methane annually, targeting heavy-duty commercial transport networks in Germany via existing pipeline networks.
The deployment underscores growing commercial adoption of power-to-X technologies, combining carbon capture with green hydrogen conversion to decarbonize long-haul transport. Utilizing established gas infrastructure accelerates adoption by circumventing immediate requirements for specialized transport fleet modifications.
For energy developers and industrial equipment vendors, the project demonstrates scalable integration of proprietary enzymatic carbon recovery systems within commercial e-fuel production, building a foundational operational model for Northern Europe's broader low-carbon energy market.
