Singapore-listed MetaOptics has established a wholly-owned subsidiary in Penang, Malaysia, to launch a dedicated capital equipment platform. The expansion focuses on scaling the automated assembly, laser writing, and metrology testing needed for volume metalens manufacturing.

MALAYSIA —Semiconductor optics specialist MetaOptics has expanded its regional manufacturing footprint by incorporating a new wholly-owned unit, MetaOptics Technologies Sdn. Bhd., in Penang, Malaysia. The strategic move positions the company to establish a specialized capital equipment production hub designed to bridge the gap between optical prototyping and high-volume commercial manufacturing. Under the new operational structure, the Penang facility will integrate automated camera module assembly, next-generation direct laser writing platforms, and wafer-level metrology systems into a unified cleanroom environment.

This geographical extension addresses critical physical limitations inherent in traditional refractive optics by accelerating the adoption of flat metalens technology. As hardware architectures reach space and thermal limits, nanometer-scale planar optics offer essential miniaturization and improved optical efficiency. By locating equipment assembly, mass fabrication, and optical quality testing in close proximity, the facility aims to significantly shorten yield optimization cycles and lower unit production costs for co-packaged optics and data center infrastructure.

The establishment of advanced testing and fabrication infrastructure in Penang strengthens Southeast Asia's broader semiconductor and photonics ecosystem. Supply chain partners across semiconductor packaging, integrated photonics, and hardware manufacturing stand to gain from localized access to high-precision equipment platforms. The expansion leverages Malaysia's established semiconductor talent pool and logistical connectivity while maintaining Singapore as the corporate headquarters for core research, optical design, and strategic management.

For technology investors and hardware manufacturers, the deployment of specialized 12-inch laser writing platforms represents a major step toward commercializing planar optics at scale. Streamlining the transition from pilot design to wafer-level automated testing removes key manufacturing bottlenecks, enabling broader integration of metalenses across data communications, automotive sensors, mobile hardware, and consumer electronics.

MetaOptics Ltd is a Singapore-headquartered optics company listed on the Catalist board of the Singapore Exchange. The organization specializes in glass-based metalens design, advanced optical simulation, and scalable lithography manufacturing for next-generation optical applications.
