INDIA —Shyam Metalics & Energy Ltd has entered into a strategic memorandum of understanding with the Government of Maharashtra to build an integrated steel manufacturing complex in Chandrapur district. The proposed greenfield project involves a total investment of INR 500 billion and is designed for an overall production capacity of 9 million tonnes per annum. Execution will proceed in two distinct phases, starting with an initial finished steel capacity of 3.75 million tonnes per annum, followed by a second phase adding 5.25 million tonnes per annum. The enterprise will initiate the required regulatory filings, site permissions, and environmental clearances during the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Headquartered in Kolkata, Shyam Metalics & Energy Ltd is an integrated Indian metal producer operating extensive production networks across West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. The company maintains an aggregate installed metal capacity of 16.93 million tonnes per annum alongside 467 megawatts of captive power generation, manufacturing flat and long steel, ferro alloys, stainless steel, and aluminium items.
The establishment of a large-scale steel hub in Vidarbha addresses long-term industrialization objectives for eastern Maharashtra by leveraging surrounding mineral wealth. Chandrapur provides direct geographic access to nearby iron ore deposits in Gadchiroli, coal belts, limestone, and dolomite resources, alongside established power grid connections and transport infrastructure. The project is expected to create 10,000 direct employment opportunities and 20,000 indirect positions, providing strong structural demand for local equipment fabrication, logistics services, and regional engineering contractors.
By expanding domestic manufacturing of value-added finished steel products, the development supports national import substitution goals across infrastructure, construction, automotive, railway, and energy sectors. The complex is engineered for full-spectrum production—covering raw material pelletisation, sintering, coke production, blast furnace ironmaking, direct reduced iron processing, continuous casting, and downstream rolling. Environmental design parameters incorporate circular utility systems including waste heat recovery power generation, closed-loop water recycling, and coke dry quenching to optimize energy usage and reduce ecological impact.
