Siemens Mobility secures contract for ETCS signaling on Mexico’s 300-kilometer rail corridor

A consortium led by Siemens Mobility and Sonda México will deploy advanced European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 technology on the Mexico City–Querétaro–Irapuato railway. The project marks the first implementation of Siemens' TPS.plan software in Latin America, aiming to modernize regional passenger infrastructure and enhance operational safety.

Siemens Mobility has been awarded a milestone contract to modernize signaling and rail infrastructure across a 300-kilometer corridor connecting Mexico City with Irapuato. Working alongside Sonda México SA de CV, Siemens will install ETCS Level 1 wayside signaling, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and a primary Operational Control Center with a dedicated backup. Siemens Mobility is a separately managed company of Siemens AG, specializing in rolling stock, rail automation, and intelligent traffic systems. Sonda is an IT services provider focused on digital transformation and infrastructure solutions in Latin America.

This development is a critical step in Mexico’s federal strategy to transition toward high-capacity, sustainable passenger rail. By replacing fragmented legacy systems with the standardized ETCS Level 1 protocol, the project ensures continuous speed supervision and movement authority, significantly reducing the risk of human error. Furthermore, the regional debut of TPS.plan software enables microscopic infrastructure modeling, allowing operators to generate conflict-free schedules and optimize track path utilization.

For the Bajío region and the states of Hidalgo, Querétaro, and Guanajuato, this modernization bolsters economic competitiveness by improving commuter connectivity to the capital. For global rail stakeholders and investors, Siemens' entry into the Mexican ETCS market signals a shift toward standardized digital signaling in North America. The project not only establishes new benchmarks for automation and cyber-secure signaling in the region but also creates a scalable blueprint for future cross-border and intercity rail digitalizations across Latin America.
