The South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved $150.7 million in loans and grants for water and waste management projects across 31 communities and districts. The funding package includes $133.9 million in low-interest loans and $16.9 million in grants for drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste systems.

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources has announced the approval of $150.7 million in financing for drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste infrastructure projects statewide. The package comprises $133.89 million in low-interest loans, including $17.88 million in principal forgiveness, and $16.89 million in grants.

Funding is drawn from multiple state and federal programs including the Drinking Water and Clean Water State Revolving Funds. Major allocations include a $16.19 million loan to Aberdeen for wastewater treatment facility completion, $9.16 million to Hot Springs for wastewater treatment replacement, and $15.5 million to Milbank for treatment facility improvements.

Belle Fourche received three loans totalling approximately $8.3 million for well drilling, waterline replacement, and landfill cell construction. This development matters for the US water infrastructure sector, where state revolving funds are primary financing mechanisms for municipal projects addressing aging systems and regulatory compliance. The funding supports replacement of century-old waterlines, storm sewer improvements, and treatment capacity expansions across rural and urban communities.

For the engineering and construction industry, the approved projects create a pipeline of contract opportunities for water treatment, pipeline installation, and facility upgrades. Stakeholders including municipal utilities, engineering firms, and equipment suppliers stand to benefit from the multi-year implementation timeline. The package also includes grants for feasibility studies and an online wetland screening tool.
