SPIE builds three substations to strengthen Offenbach power grid

SPIE is delivering three new substations in Offenbach for grid operator Energienetze Offenbach, featuring fully SF₆-free GIS switchgear at 110 kV and 20 kV levels. The project, launched in November 2025, includes 14 to 16 bays per substation and will take approximately three years to complete, supporting renewable energy integration.

SPIE is delivering three new substations in Offenbach on behalf of Gesellschaft für Hochspannungsbau Offenbach, owned by local grid operator Energienetze Offenbach, according to an official announcement. The substations in the north, east, and south of the city will be equipped with modern, fully SF₆-free GIS switchgear at 110 kV and 20 kV levels, eliminating sulphur hexafluoride, a climate-damaging insulating gas, to significantly reduce the carbon footprint.

SPIE is an independent European multi-technical services company specialising in energy and communications. The project launched in November 2025, with Offenbach Nord and Ost to be implemented in parallel from September 2026, followed by Offenbach Süd in July 2027. The installation phase will take approximately three years. SPIE's scope includes approval planning, building erection, engineering for primary and secondary systems, installation of protection and control systems, project and site management, and commissioning.

This development matters for Germany's energy transition, where substations provide the grid capacity needed to integrate growing shares of renewable energy sources and ensure stable supply during periods of high demand. The use of SF₆-free technology positions SPIE among the first in Germany to implement this technology at scale, accelerating adoption of climate-friendly switchgear.

For the electrical infrastructure industry, the project demonstrates the viability of SF₆-free solutions in urban environments where confined spaces and weight constraints (up to five tonnes per switchgear bay) present installation challenges. Stakeholders including grid operators, renewable energy developers, and environmental regulators stand to benefit from reduced greenhouse gas emissions in grid infrastructure.
