INDIA —Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has operationalized a 72.5 MW captive solar power project located at Kalasar in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan. Executed via its subsidiary TP Vardhman Surya Limited, the utility-scale installation is dedicated to supplying solar power to Tata Steel Limited. Incorporating 171,360 solar modules manufactured by TP Solar Limited, the plant is projected to generate 166 million units of clean electricity annually while mitigating approximately 0.12 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
This commissioning marks a key operational step for industrial decarbonization in heavy manufacturing sectors. Energy-intensive industries like steel production face growing regulatory and market pressure to curb scope 1 and scope 2 emissions. By securing long-term solar capacity, heavy industry enterprises can lower operational carbon intensities, hedge against volatile fossil fuel tariffs, and fulfill corporate ESG mandates.
The deployment underscores the accelerating momentum of commercial and industrial captive solar projects across India. Facilities of this scale enhance regional grid decarbonization, drive demand for domestically manufactured photovoltaic modules, and support national ambitions to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Expanding renewable power integration in industrial hubs remains critical to aligning economic output with emission reduction targets.
For enterprise energy consumers and power developers, the project highlights the viability of corporate power purchase arrangements to optimize energy costs and sustainability benchmarks. The asset expansion brings the developer's total operational utility portfolio to 7 GW—comprising 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind generation—with an additional 5.3 GW of capacity currently under implementation.
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited is a major Indian clean energy developer specializing in utility-scale solar, wind, and hybrid projects. Its parent company, The Tata Power Company Limited, is an integrated power utility with an operational and under-construction generation capacity exceeding 26 GW across thermal and renewable assets.
