INDIA —Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has commissioned Technip Energies to execute a major infrastructure upgrade at its Lube Modernization and Bottom Upgradation (LMBU) project in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The assignment centers on the deployment of advanced refining systems designed to optimize heavy feedstock conversion and elevate output standards for specialized lubricants and automotive oils.
The agreement encompasses the installation of a 550 kilotonnes per annum Integrated Hydrocracker and Catalytic Dewaxing unit alongside an 850 kilotonnes per annum Solvent Deasphalting plant. These technological additions will be embedded seamlessly within the functioning industrial complex, marking a critical step in upgrading domestic production capacity for high-margin petroleum derivatives.
Valued between 250 million and 500 million euros, this development fortifies long-standing operational ties between the contracting entities spanning over two decades. The financial commitment reflects broader industry trends prioritizing asset optimization, higher resource yields, and strict compliance with evolving environmental and technical standards in downstream processing.
For regional energy markets and industrial stakeholders, the initiative signals sustained capital expenditure toward domestic refining self-sufficiency. By transforming heavier residue streams into valuable commercial grades, the program enhances long-term competitiveness and secures robust processing capabilities to fulfill expanding industrial demand across domestic markets.
