Technip Energies secures two FEED Contracts for Gabon refinery revamp and expansion

Technip Energies has won two FEED contracts from SOGARA to upgrade and expand its Port-Gentil refinery. The projects aim to meet Africa’s strict sulfur standards, reducing emissions while boosting local refining capacity and economic activity.

Technip Energies has been awarded two front-end engineering design (FEED) contracts by Société Gabonaise de Raffinage (SOGARA) for the latter’s refinery in Port-Gentil, Gabon.

The first contract addresses debottlenecking of existing units, including a new kerosene sweetening facility and four storage tanks. The second covers a modular hydrocracker complex, a marine jetty, and hydrogen production using Technip’s proprietary steam methane reforming (SMR) technology. This development matters because Gabon aims to comply with Africa 5 fuel quality standards, the continent’s most stringent sulfur limits for transport fuels, reducing sulfur emissions and improving air quality.

The revamp and expansion will also support local employment and Gabon’s economic diversification beyond crude exports. Industries impacted include downstream oil and gas, engineering services, and logistics. Regional stakeholders include West African refiners facing similar regulatory pressures to upgrade fuel specifications.

For investors, the contracts signal growing demand for modular, low-sulfur refining solutions in emerging markets, potentially opening further FEED and EPC opportunities across Africa.

SOGARA is Gabon’s state-controlled refining company operating the country’s sole crude processing facility in Port-Gentil.
