INDIA —Urban infrastructure development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has achieved a notable construction milestone along a key alternative traffic corridor. According to an official statement by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), project execution on the Thane Coastal Road-1 project has reached 45 per cent overall completion, propelled by a record-setting girder erection rate.
During operations, construction crews successfully erected 10 I-girders in a single day on October 14, 2026. This performance significantly surpassed the standard daily output of four to six girders, accelerating structural assembly along the elevated sections of the alignment. The 13.45-kilometer, six-lane, access-controlled corridor is engineered to connect NH-3 and NH-48 at Kharegaon Toll Naka directly with Gaimukh.
From a regional transportation perspective, the coastal road serves as a crucial bypass to alleviate severe chronic congestion along the heavily utilized Ghodbunder Road. By establishing a high-capacity alternative route for commuter and commercial freight traffic moving across Thane's western periphery, the project aims to substantially reduce transit times, lower vehicular emissions, and improve logistical efficiency across the wider metropolitan network.
