India's Union Cabinet has approved five major transportation infrastructure projects with a total budget of INR 130.41 billion. The investment includes four railway multi-tracking initiatives worth INR 94.5 billion aimed at decongesting high-density freight corridors along the eastern coast, alongside an INR 35.91 billion highway corridor expansion in Bihar.

The Union Cabinet of India has sanctioned a combined investment of INR 130.41 billion to execute five key transportation infrastructure initiatives across eastern and southern India, according to official governmental announcements. The capital package allocates approximately INR 94.5 billion to construct 410 kilometers of third and fourth railway tracks across four strategic corridors, alongside INR 35.91 billion for the four-laning of the National Highway 22 corridor between Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and Sonbarsa in Bihar. The Union Cabinet serves as the supreme executive decision-making council of the Indian government, directing major national policy and capital spending initiatives. Indian Railways, the national operator under the Ministry of Railways, will oversee the rail expansions, which aim to expand network capacity and boost freight movement by 76 million tonnes annually.

The four targeted rail projects address severe capacity saturation across the high-density Howrah-Chennai trunk route and key industrial feeder networks. The approved rail developments comprise the 173-kilometer Kharagpur-Bhadrak fourth line across West Bengal and Odisha, the 75-kilometer Bhadrak-Haridaspur fourth line in Odisha, the 90-kilometer Gummidipundi-Gudur third and fourth line connecting Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and the 72-kilometer Cuttack-Paradeep line in Odisha. Operating at line capacity utilization levels ranging from 91% to 177%, these corridors currently experience significant operational bottlenecks. Expanding track capacity along these routes directly connects major industrial steel hubs in Jakhapura, Tatanagar, and Durgapur with deepwater maritime facilities at Paradip and Dhamra ports.

From an industrial and logistical perspective, the track expansions strengthen vital supply chain corridors underpinning India's heavy manufacturing, mining, and export economies. The Gummidipundi-Gudur section serves as a crucial segment of both the Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor and the broader East Coast Economic Corridor, facilitating seamless movement across the eastern seaboard. Furthermore, upgrading the Cuttack-Paradeep rail link improves raw material haulage, including iron ore and coal, from hinterland mining belts to primary steel manufacturing clusters and export terminals. Concurrently, the four-lane brownfield expansion of NH-22 in Bihar will halve passenger and commercial transit times between Muzaffarpur and the Sonbarsa border zone from two hours to one hour, enhancing cross-border connectivity and regional freight efficiency.

For private engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, the capital allocation generates substantial public procurement opportunities in earthworks, track laying, signaling, and highway engineering. The addition of 76 million tonnes per annum in rail freight capacity allows industrial freight shippers to transition bulk commodities from road to rail, reducing logistics overheads and supporting long-term decarbonization goals. By relieving systemic network saturation, the government's infrastructure investment ensures higher reliability for long-distance passenger services while bolstering supply chain resilience for domestic steel, energy, and port-led commercial sectors across eastern and southern India.
