Hanwha Defense USA has secured a U.S. Army contract to deliver initial K9 Mobile Howitzer prototypes for the Mobile Tactical Cannon program. The deal includes facility investments in Alabama to strengthen domestic defense supply chains.

The U.S. Army has awarded a contract to Hanwha Defense USA for the delivery of prototype K9 Mobile Howitzers under its Mobile Tactical Cannon program. The initial agreement covers the accelerated supply of six 155mm prototype systems, with provisions to supply up to 12 additional units through an optional extension.

Hanwha Defense USA, the American subsidiary of South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace, specializes in land systems engineering, artillery manufacturing, and defense technology integration. The entity serves as the prime operational arm for expanding Hanwha's military equipment footprint across North American defense procurement markets.

This hardware procurement supports ongoing military modernization strategies focused on enhancing long-range precision fires capabilities. By integrating proven mobile self-propelled artillery platforms, defense planners aim to improve tactical mobility and firepower responsiveness for ground forces in modernized combat environments.

To support assembly, integration, and testing of the artillery vehicles, the company has secured a three-year lease to establish an operational facility in Opelika, Alabama. The establishment of this local integration infrastructure aims to strengthen domestic defense industrial supply chains while positioning the firm for potential long-term manufacturing expansion in the United States.

The agreement underscores growing opportunities for foreign-headquartered defense contractors to supply defense systems to the Department of Defense by establishing onshore production capabilities. The platform selection offers defense investors and suppliers clear visibility into changing artillery requirements while bolstering localized manufacturing and assembly networks within the U.S. industrial base.
