Albany Engineered Composites has secured a $21.2 million federal contract to build domestic manufacturing capacity for carbon-carbon thermal protection systems. The 30-month project targets critical supply chain bottlenecks for hypersonic defense technologies and solid rocket motors.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA —A $21.2 million federal agreement has been awarded to advance domestic manufacturing capabilities for advanced thermal protection systems used in hypersonic flight and solid rocket propulsion. Executed through the U.S. Army Contracting Command - Rock Island via a Cornerstone Other Transaction Authority, the 30-month initiative is funded under the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment program for Strengthening America's Manufacturing and Defense Industrial Base (SAMDIB).

The investment addresses a vital vulnerability in the defense industrial base by establishing scalable, vertically integrated production infrastructure. Extreme thermal environments generated by hypersonic velocity and rocket propulsion demand specialized materials capable of withstanding intense thermal and structural stress. The effort focuses on scaling the fabrication of carbon-carbon composite thermal protection components, integrating technologies such as three-dimensional woven preforms and resin transfer molding to lower production costs while increasing yield volume.

This development significantly impacts the aerospace, defense, and advanced materials sectors. By transitioning thermal protection components from specialized low-volume output to automated, repeatable manufacturing processes, the initiative strengthens domestic defense readiness and reduces reliance on constrained manufacturing pipelines. Key stakeholders include military procurement agencies, defense prime contractors, and high-performance material suppliers across North America.

For defense contractors and institutional investors, the expansion signals a strategic push toward domestic supply chain resilience in critical propulsion and thermal technologies. Enterprise capabilities that integrate advanced automated weaving and densification offer long-term operational advantages as federal defense budgets prioritize scalable hypersonic defense programs.

Albany Engineered Composites, an operating unit of New Hampshire-headquartered Albany International Corp., designs and manufactures advanced structural composite components for commercial and military aerospace applications. Its parent entity operates 25 facilities globally across custom industrial materials and aerospace manufacturing segments.
