US interior department allocates $889m for western water infrastructure under 'One Big Beautiful Bill'

The Department of the Interior has committed USD 889 million to modernise aging water systems across six western states. Funded by the One Big Beautiful Bill, the initiative targets canal rehabilitation and reservoir expansion to bolster agricultural reliability and urban water security amid persistent drought conditions.

The Department of the Interior has unveiled a funding package totaling USD 889 million to advance critical water infrastructure projects in California, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. The allocation, drawn from the One Big Beautiful Bill enacted in July 2025, channels resources through the Bureau of Reclamation to rehabilitate conveyance systems, correct subsidence damage, and increase surface water storage capacity.

California receives the majority of the investment, with USD 540 million designated for Central Valley projects. Key allocations include USD 235 million for the Delta-Mendota Canal to fund embankment repairs and explore new lined segments, USD 200 million for subsidence correction along the Friant-Kern Canal, and USD 50 million to address ground settling issues on the San Luis Canal. Additionally, USD 15 million will upgrade pumping capacity at the Tehama-Colusa Canal Authority, while USD 40 million supports preconstruction work for raising Shasta Dam, a move projected to add roughly 634,000 acre-feet of storage.

The initiative aligns with a broader federal strategy to enhance drought resilience and water supply reliability. For agricultural operators and municipal planners across the arid West, these upgrades are expected to mitigate delivery disruptions and stabilise access for irrigation and domestic use. By targeting both immediate repairs and long-term storage expansion, the programme aims to reduce vulnerability to hydrological variability and support more predictable output from one of the nation's most productive farming regions. The Bureau of Reclamation, an agency within the Department of the Interior, manages water and power resources in the western United States and is the primary executor of the funded projects.
