The US Department of the Navy has awarded Bell Textron an estimated $300 million contract to implement SPINE structural and electrical upgrades across up to 49 Marine Corps H-1 helicopters, boosting power capacity and survivability with modifications starting in mid-2027.

Bell Textron Inc., a Fort Worth, Texas-based aerospace manufacturer and subsidiary of Textron Inc. that specializes in military rotorcraft and commercial vertical lift aircraft, has secured a defense contract valued at approximately $300 million from the US Department of the Navy. Under the Phase 3.0 agreement, the contractor will implement the Structural and Power Improvements for NextGen Effects (SPINE) modification across up to 49 US Marine Corps helicopters, comprising 21 UH-1Y Venom utility units and 28 AH-1Z Viper attack aircraft. Production activities are scheduled to begin at the company's Amarillo Assembly Center in Texas during mid-2027, with initial upgraded aircraft deliveries anticipated in 2028.

According to official defense disclosures, the contract combines firm-fixed-price, fixed-price incentive, and cost-plus-fixed-fee arrangements. The procurement marks a pivotal transition from initial development into fleet-wide operational capability enhancements for the US Marine Corps' light attack and utility helicopter inventory. By retrofitting existing airframes with enhanced electrical generation and revised structural architecture, the SPINE program directly addresses the surging power requirements of modern avionics, electronic warfare systems, tactical communications, and advanced sensor suites.
