FRANCE; GREECE —Vallourec has won a contract from EnEarth, a subsidiary of Energean, to provide premium tubular solutions for the first phase of the Prinos CO2 carbon storage project offshore Greece. The award covers approximately 3,000 tonnes of casing pipes and associated accessories, including seamless carbon steel and corrosion-resistant alloy products fitted with premium connections.
Prinos CO2 is being developed by EnEarth to convert a depleted oil reservoir into a permanent carbon storage facility. The project has a targeted CO2 injection capacity of up to 2.8 million tonnes per year and an estimated proved plus probable storage capacity of 51.5 million tonnes, according to an independent competent person’s report cited in the announcement. The project has also been recognized by the European Union as a Project of Common Interest and is supported by European and Greek funding programs.
The contract is strategically relevant to the carbon capture and storage supply chain because permanent underground CO2 storage requires well infrastructure capable of maintaining integrity over long operating periods. Vallourec’s scope includes corrosion-resistant tubular products, premium connections and its dope-free CLEANWELL solution, with the equipment intended to support the reliability and environmental requirements of CO2 injection wells.
For Greece and the wider Eastern Mediterranean, Prinos CO2 represents an emerging piece of industrial decarbonization infrastructure. Its planned scale could provide a storage pathway for emissions from energy-intensive industries that face constraints in reducing process emissions through electrification or other measures. The project therefore has implications for industrial facilities, carbon capture developers, transport infrastructure providers and specialist oilfield-service suppliers.
For Vallourec, the award expands its exposure to the carbon capture and storage market while applying technologies traditionally associated with demanding oil and gas well environments to an energy-transition application. Vallourec is a France-based supplier of premium tubular products serving energy and industrial markets, with operations in more than 20 countries. For businesses and investors, the contract also illustrates how established oilfield-service and tubular technology providers may participate in the emerging CCS infrastructure market as European storage capacity develops.
